All you creative geniuses . . .

So I've got this wall. This is what you see when you walk in my front door. I've been thinking lately that it's a little boring and lacking in flair/color.

I think I'm going to start with switching out the black and white photos for color ones. They have been in there for over a year anyway. Any other ideas for me? Should something be on the shelf on top? And if so what?

OK, never let it be said that I didn't have an opinion or idea!!!! So, since you asked....Yes, stick some plants on top, and maybe a few mementos. Make it personal. Decorating is NOTHING if its not personal.

Can you take the molding off the wall? The molding is really dating the room and limiting you. What if instead of having family photos there you hung some art? You can get some really quite reasonably priced art at placed like TJ MAXX or Ross.Get a BIG piece. And don't hang it too high.... Look around and don't be in a hurry to find something...Save the family photos for the family room.

In your family room group all these photos together. There are too few for two groupings...make it all one grouping. It will be far more interesting if they are all together. Right now they are reading as two separate vignettes.

(Your mom is soooo going to laugh at me for posting this...but you remind her that YOU DID ASK!

Okay, I saw this awesome picture arrangement that could be really cool on this wall, you can see it at this site, just scroll way down to home #8, and see the arrangement that comes down from the corner of the room. I thought it was cool. I'd like to see you keep the family photos here to be the cool thing to look at, just add more, and try that cool arrangement! http://www.cookiemag.com/magazine/blogs/nesting/best_of_2008/index.html

Sister Toronto is right--I was going to suggest some cute green topiaries or something for the shelf. Whatever you do, you'll make it lovely, I'm sure.

It could be cool too to do some giant hanging sign with vinyl lettering that hung centered in the space above the wall...maybe!

I agree that you need something BIG. You can do artwork, plates, iron work, whatever...but it needs to fill the wall.

There are a ton of great home decor blogs out there for ideas.

Love all these ideas! Part of the problem is that the molding is part of a wall panel. Yes it's dating, but if I don't want to spend a lot of money ripping the panel out and replacing it, I've got to work around it. I could paint it to blend in . . . hmmmm.
